As she felt his arm wrap loosely around her shoulder, she couldn’t help but give a faint smile. No matter how faint the touch was, it gave her a sense of comfort and safety. Opening her eyes for a brief moment to look at the TV, she noted that the program on was something like one of the nature shows she enjoyed watching back home. Only now she was hardly able to understand what was being said. Giving a soft chuckle, she rested her head back against his shoulder. “At least I can tell what the animals are.”
Some of the words weren’t too far of a stretch from what she was used to. But, after a few minutes of deep confusion, Amelia quickly leaned over his lap to take hold of the remote. “I’m so lost right now.” She chuckled and tapped one of the buttons to put on the English subtitles so she could at least translate somewhat on her own. “There. Least I know what’s goin’ on now.” Leaning back over him, she dropped the remote on the other side of the dog before settling herself back against his frame.
Ludwig’s surprise at the sudden appearance of subtitles on his TV screen was almost impossible to contain. He had only just figured out how to record things on his new server, much less realize that it had the ability to automatically annotate shows as well. “Well, would you look at that,” he muttered in awe.
Attempting to smooth over his technologically challenged outbreak before Amelia noticed Ludwig kissed her head sweetly, hoping that would cover him enough. As she rested against him he wondered if she would be behaving any differently if she wasn’t so tired. He knew there was a very strong possibility he would be, most likely in the form of over thinking and taking a fair amount of coaxing before allowing himself to just relax as they were. Perhaps their mutual exhaustion wasn’t such a terrible thing after all.

Walking back out to see he wasn’t standing in that spot anymore, she peeked around the corner to find him sitting on the couch, the younger dog seated next to him. She couldn’t help but crack a smile as the dog let it’s head fall into his lap. Figuring it best not to try and move him, she walked out to him and took a seat beside him by wedging her way between his side and the arm of the couch. Amelia lifted her legs and draped them comfortably over his as she let her head fall against his chest. She was far too tired to even take her jacket out, despite how warm she was. She simply didn’t have the energy.
With a faint sigh, she looked at the dog as he nudged her legs with his head. “We’ll play later, little guy.” Her response seemed to elicit a faint whine from the dog. It didn’t seem too keen on her lack of energy at the moment. Closing her eyes, she spoke softly as she folded her hands in her lap. “I don’t care what we watch.. Just put something on so we don’t just sit here in the quiet..” She shifted just a bit and let out another soft sigh.
The puppy’s affection towards Amelia was almost comical to Ludwig, seeing the small glimmer of hope pass over the dog’s face that maybe this time he would be allowed on the couch without any sort of scolding. He had to admit though the feeling of both Amelia and his dogs on either side of him was something he could without a doubt get used to. Whether he’d be willing to admit it or not he was incredibly comfortable staying as they were, his exhaustion only helped encourage his unwillingness to move.
“It’ll be in German then,” he said almost as an apology. Trying to avoid moving as much as possible he bent forward slightly, taking the remote from the coffee table and putting on a rather basic nature show figuring even in a foreign language Amelia would still be able to follow the premise without getting to confused. With a tired sigh he placed the remote down on the other side of the younger dog, allowing himself to drape his arm around Amelia’s shoulder afterwards figuring it would do no harm.

“Oh gee, I think I do. I forgot I had makeup on,” she said with a yawn as she turned to head off down the hallway. “I’m gonna go wash up real quick.” Amelia had hoped if she at least washed the makeup from her face, some of the tiredness would wash away with it. Upon finding the bathroom, she wasn’t surprised with how it looked. Plain, simple colors and few decorations. Typical man’s bathroom in her opinion. She gave a faint chuckle while she turned on the sink, letting the water warm up slightly.
As she leaned over the sink, she adjusted her hair clips to keep her bangs pinned back against her scalp. “Geez.. I look like I’ve been through hell an’ back..” After another long sigh, she dipped her hands into the warm water and began washing the makeup from her face. Normally, she’d never go out without even the slightest bit of cover up on to hide tiny blemishes. Looking up to see her pale face, totally free of makeup, she frowned a bit. “Shit, I look worse..” Amelia plucked a towel from the rack and promptly patted the remainder of water from her face before walking back out into his living room, completely forgetting that her clips were still pinning her bangs back in a ridiculous manner.
As Amelia left to wash her face, or whatever it is she needed to do to try and clear her head, Ludwig headed back over to his living room. The younger dog bolting ahead in order to steal the couch from anyone else sitting on the soft part in the middle. Never mind the fact it had just seen the guest and was well aware that Ludwig was on his way to sit down. There was never any reasoning with the younger dog, he’d spent far to much time trying to lighten up the usually serious house to care if he got scolded for sitting on the couch.
Rolling his eyes at the puppy Ludwig gave his side one hard shove to the side, taking a seat beside him much to the dogs dismay. Thankfully for the puppy he was far to tired to try and start a fight over the couches just yet. The remote sat untouched on the coffee table in front of him, he’d leave it up to Amelia to decide what to watch, though he doubted he got many stations that played entirely in English. Hopefully all she would really need is a chance to relax and the TV could simply be playing as white noise to allow her a chance to de-stress.

Giving her a quick look up and down Ludwig found it almost to easy to point out how hard this weekend had been on Amelia. Her usual cheerfully pulled together looked seemed almost forced, her bouncy curls in need of a little care, and her eyes obviously in need of a good rest from being rubbed. “I know the feeling. About the trouble sleeping. I normally just wind up working into the night when that happens but I doubt you’d find that helpful.”
The larger Shepherd’s head brushed against his hand as he spoke, reminding him of the fact the younger dog was still vying for Amelia’s attention entirely unaware of how tired she was. “If you’d just want to watch television that’s fine. Anything that you think will help out.”
In an instant, it clicked that she was still wearing makeup. “Shit..” Pulling out her phone, she looked into the black screen again and saw the black smudges around her eyes. Giving another long sigh, she slid her phone back into her pocket. “TV sounds fine.. Anything to get my mind off what it’s stuck on. But before anything, where’s yer bathroom? I look like a raccoon..”
Hearing the younger dog walking around her in circles, she looked down and put a hand on his head, prompting him to sit still at an instant. “Calm down, little man.” She scratched his ears for a moment before looking back up at Ludwig.
“You don’t look like a raccoon Amelia,” he said with a comforting smile. “But the bathroom is down the hall to the left, it’s pretty easy to find.” She would no doubt be more comfortable after washing some of that make up off her face, giving her a chance to relax and possibly get some much needed sleep.
As she left for the bathroom Ludwig bent down to the younger dog’s level, snapping his fingers to turn it’s attention to him and away from Amelia. Pulling the dog over to him and giving his head a playful push down he began to wonder what else he could do to try and help Amelia out. He wasn’t exactly the best at dealing with stress despite his overload of it the majority of the time. Hopefully just a few moments of rest would be enough to help her out of her rut before she actually became as exhausted as he felt.
“Right, well we can’t let you mope around here too now can we?” Attempting to keep himself from letting his own lack of sleep bring down Amelia’s mood even more Ludwig stood, snapping his fingers to shoo the bigger dog away. “So what would help you keep your spirits up then? Besides my dog trying to lick of your face?”
With a tried smile he offered to help her stand as well. He’d had his fair share of days like that, so he knew better than anyone just how much just being around another person would help. He wasn’t about to let his own exhaustion leave her own her own through this weekend. Even if that meant he would more than likely pass out the second she returned to her home.
Pushing the younger dog off of her chest, she sat up and brushed the fur from her jacket. Taking his hands, she pulled herself to her feet and brushed the remainder of fur from her clothes. “Thank god they aren’t cats. My allergies would be going haywire by now..” With a sigh, she fixed her hair back the way she liked it and stuck her hands back into her pockets.
“Ah.. That’s actually a good question. Normally I just sleep all weekend and pick back up after the ‘holiday’, but I’ve been having trouble sleeping the past few days..” She sighed softly and rubbed her eyes, completely forgetting about the makeup she’d put on. After taking her hands away, her eyes looked something of a spectacle. Somewhat like a raccoon, as Alfred used to tell her.
“I hardly consider it a holiday anymore. It’s just a boring reminder of bad times,” she responded with a sigh, letting her head rest on the floor. The younger of the two dogs finally began to calm himself a little seeing Amelia’s own lack of energy. Something was off about her. She wasn’t her normal, bubbly self. The blonde simply closed her eyes for a moment and continued to stroke the dog’s head.
Turning her head to look at him again, she gave a faint smile. “Dude, quit that. You know you don’t bore me. Either way..” She sighed, playing with the dog’s ears, listening as it’s tail wagged and slapped against her leg. “I’d rather be around people I like and be bored than be home and depressed by myself.”
“Right, well we can’t let you mope around here too now can we?” Attempting to keep himself from letting his own lack of sleep bring down Amelia’s mood even more Ludwig stood, snapping his fingers to shoo the bigger dog away. “So what would help you keep your spirits up then? “So, what are you doing around here? For some reason I had always figured you were just constantly busy with what ever it is people like you do…” Clearing his throat, knowing he was beginning to sound awkward already. He wasn’t so sure what to say to someone like him that wouldn’t come off as blatantly rude or uncalled for.
Though the fact the other blonde seemed to ease up just a bit was reassuring. At least he hadn’t managed to scare him off just yet.
As the other spoke, Steve could tell that he was either feeling awkward, nervous, or both. However, he had no idea how to ask without making the situation worse.
“Well, I’m just trying to integrate myself into the populous a bit more. I’m still trying to adjust to the time period shift, and I was so wrapped up in other business that I never took any sort of a break. I decided to treat myself, I suppose.”
“Right… I’d heard about that whole being frozen for seventy years issue. I’m very sorry for that. It does seem rather confusing for someone like you to be thrown into a world like this.” If Ludwig knew how to help Steve by all means he would, however, Alfred had made it very clear the other nations were to allow him to rehabilitate himself on his own. Some strange pride thing he supposed.
Still, if the man intended to relax Ludwig saw no harm in simply offering a little friendly support. Something he himself could use every now and again as well. “How’s that been working out for you? Things now days aren’t so good with moving slowly.”
After a few seconds of lingering in that position, she gave in to the slight twinge of pain she felt in her back and plopped down onto the floor into front of the dogs. “D’aww, poor boys missed Momma~” Amelia normally called herself by that title when talking about animals that seemed fond of her, which Ludwig’s dogs seemed more than fond. The one Ludwig didn’t take hold of waited a few seconds before springing forward and “tackling” her back onto the floor.
Giggling wildly from the tongue lathering her face with slobber, she put her hands behind the dog’s ears and started scratching to distract him long enough to move her face. Shifting her vision so she could look up at him, she sighed. “It’s uh… It’s Memorial Day weekend.. Bein’ at home isn’t something I really like to do. Bums me out, ya know?”
“Ah right, I’d forgotten about that little holiday of yours. I’m very sorry, I understand completely.” Taking the dog’s head under his arm playfully, letting him busy himself with trying to escape. The younger dog which had been having his way completely covering Amelia’s face in rather messy licks was all too happy to get some attention of his own.
“If there’s anything you need feel free to ask, though you know I’m not the best person when it comes to being entertaining even on a good day.” With a smile Ludwig sat down beside her, letting the older dog paw at his lap as he sneezed in Ludwig’s face obviously annoyed with being wrestled away from Amelia. “I’ve had a rather rough week, so I’m more boring than usual today, but if you don’t mind that feel free to make yourself at home.”

There was no doubt he had placed the man in an awkward situation, as there was absolutely no way Ludwig could even try to hide his nationality around the legend. Despite the fact Alfred had drilled it into his head how much trauma his country had caused the man.
“Well I knew that much, and you can call me Ludwig. Sir isn’t necessary,” he said with a smile, attempting to make the man a little less uncomfortable.
Steve knew for a fact that the German people were good people. He didn’t blame them for anything that had happened, and felt guilty about the fact that he sometimes got small drops of unease when faced with the nation, its people, etc. However, the blond managed to push a smile onto his face, and push through the slight discomfort.
“If you insist, Ludwig.” He said, as he relaxed his shoulders.
“So, what are you doing around here? For some reason I had always figured you were just constantly busy with what ever it is people like you do…” Clearing his throat, knowing he was beginning to sound awkward already. He wasn’t so sure what to say to someone like him that wouldn’t come off as blantantly rude or uncalled for.
Though the fact the other blonde seemed to ease up just a bit was reassuring. At least he hadn’t managed to scare him off just yet.
The sound of someone knocking on the door was the only thing keeping him from falling asleep right there on the couch. The dogs’ excessive barking only quieted when he snapped his fingers at them, but even that only managed to keep them standing at his feet all to eager to see who their guest was. With a tired sigh Ludwig opened the door, trying his best to cover up his exhaustion as he greeted the guest. “Hallo can I— Oh Amelia! It’s nice to see you, come on in,” he said with a smile.
He had believed they agreed she would give him a heads up before popping over, but he wasn’t about to complain. As he stepped out of the way to allow her in he reached down to keep a firm grip on the dog’s collars, knowing how easily they could push her over if they jumped on her.
Hoping her eyes weren’t too red from earlier in the afternoon, Amelia quickly pulled her phone out to use the black screen as a mirror. The whites of her eyes still had a faint pink tint from before. With a shaken sigh, she dropped her phone back into her jacket pocket. Once the door open, she put on a quick smile and looked up at him. “Hey, Lud~ I hope ya don’t mind me droppin’ by outta the blue like this..” She stepped in and watched as his dogs looked at her excitedly, almost in a manner begging to be let go of to greet the new guest.
After kicking off her boots by the front door, she bent over and put a hand on either dog’s head. “Oh, hey boys~ Did ya miss me~?”
“Of course I don’t mind. I had just gotten home so I just wasn’t expecting anyone so soon.” Keeping the grip on the dogs collars became pointless as she bent down to pet them yet he still attempted to keep them from tackling her so quickly. “Of course they did, they’ve been born out of their minds with just me around here,” he chuckled, slowly loosening his grip until the dogs were free, pulling the door closed behind Amelia.
Slowly kneeling down next to her Ludwig tried his best to keep the dogs from knocking her over, pulling one’s head towards him playfully to keep the two from fighting over who got to greet her first. “So what brings you over here?”
